Main Project Contact: Prof. Tat-Hean Gan

Profile: Brunel Innovation Centre is one of Europe's top Higher Education Institutions. Brunel University will participate in MonitoRail through the Centre for Electronics Systems Research. The CESR is engaged in both fundamental and applied research to improve the control and operations of industrial processes and to enrich the quality of life and services for the 21st century needs. The technological emphasis is on establishing a sound theoretical and practical understanding of new and potentially significant advances.
Research interests focus on the interface with the real world and involve areas such as bio-naotechnology (Lab-on-a-Chip for point-of-care-diagnostics), GNSS and wireless technologies based LBS systems for blind navigation, biometrics, use of ultrasonic and electromagnetic acoustic guided wave for NDT, fundamentals of charge particle dynamics, measurement systems for pharmaceutical drug aerosol characterisation, medical electronics, pattern recognition, image processing, theory and application of neural networks, evolutionary hardware, and human factors in product and system design .

Role in the project / Tasks Attributed: Brunel Innovation Centre is one of the research and development organisations participating in the project. They will be mainly involved in the simulation / modelling of guided waves, arrays and focusing methods (WP2). Brunel Innovation Centre will partially participate to all WPs providing R&D support and also they will participate to the dissemination of the results.

Previous experience relating to their role: The BU personnel involved in the project has considerable expertise in the field of NDT research and these skills will be used to support the consortium. BU has been involved in the modelling of ultrasound for several years and has participated in several collaborative projects.

Profile of Staff undertaking the job: The research team that will undertake the task consists of engineers and physicists. This team has extensive expertise in modelling of guided waves and AE/LRU technique. The team from Brunel Innovation Centre will be led by Professor Tat-Hean Gan.

Reasons for selection by the SMEs: The SMEs have selected Brunel Innovation Centre for the research and development aspects of the projects, due to its research team's experience in the modelling of ultrasound which is vital for the successful completion of this part of the project.
