Main Project Contact: Steve Yianni
Profile: Network Rail Infrastructure Limited has responsibility for the management of the UK national rail infrastructure. Network Rail manages 33,500km of rail track and carries 2.8 million passengers everyday. In Europe, only Deutsche Bahn carries more passengers than Network Rail, which in 2007 carried 90 million more passengers than SNCF. The annual turnover for the company exceeded 8 billion Euros last year. Its main activities are to provide train operators with railway track access, manage train timetabling, train planning and signalling, maintain and renew the infrastructure, and undertake major capital programmes including the construction of new railroad lines. As a company limited by guarantee, the Company has no share capital and does not have shareholders, but instead has Members. The role of Members is similar to that of shareholders in a public limited company. In particular, Members of Network Rail have an important role in ensuring that Network Rail is managed in line with high standards of corporate governance. Network Rail has a detailed strategy to deliver a safe and efficient railway that the public can depend on.
Role in the project / Tasks Attributed: Network Rail will be the involved in WP1. It will
provide its knowledge on rail track inspection and maintenance for the provision of requirements and
characteristics.
Moreover, it will ensure that the results of the project address SME needs and can be
used by a large number of SMEs. The scope of its activity will be focused on validation, take-up, training and
dissemination activities, but not on research activities. They will be partially involved in laboratory trials
(WP8), and dissemination (WP9). Network Rail will provide valuable information regarding rail inspection and
maintenance procedures.
Previous experience relating to their role:Network Rail as an infrastructure manager has
extensive experience in all rail maintenance and inspection related issues. It also has been involved heavily
in several collaborative projects in the past with significant success.
Benefits of participation to the project:The inspection and maintenance processes adopted on the UK rail network are the sole responsibility of Network Rail. Investigating the benefits of novel solutions for these processes is an ongoing task for Network Rail engineers. Network Rail is required by the Office of Rail Regulation to provide year on year cost reductions and performance improvements. The consortium will benefit by Network Rail's participation because of its extensive experience in rail subjects.
Profile of Staff undertaking the job: Mr. John Amoore, Senior Research and Development Specialist. Mr Amoore is responsible for the Research and Development activities in Network Rail. He is very experienced in national and European Commission funded projects including a number of projects focussed on rail inspection and vehicle track interaction.
